The annual Winter Formal is getting a makeover this year.

From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, the Dillard Library will be transformed into a place for food, music and dance by the Student Government Association.

The Winter Formal has been an event at FPC since the college was started in 1948.

“The college president was J.W. Dillard and he wanted the students to have the full college experience,” Debra Wells said.

She said that the Winter Formal was big in the 40s and 50s. In the 80s is when The Student Government Association took over the event.

This year SGA decided to do things a little differently. Instead of the usual formal of dresses and suits, they decided this year would be a good year for an ugly sweater contest, rebranding the event as “Winter [Un]Formal”.

“We wanted to provide a more inviting environment, because we understand that not everyone has formal attire,” Secretary Mandy Duncan said.

To participate in the ugly sweater contest, students simply show up in an “ugly Christmas sweater” and have a good time with friends. There will be three judges, Derrick Cummings, Robyn Line, and Deana Moon, walking around and assessing everyone’s sweaters. At the end of night, three participants will be chosen for the best ugly sweater. First, second and third place will all receive Sonic gift cards as well some treats for finals.

President Erica Wheeler will oversee the music selection and is open to any suggestions for songs.

“We want students to come out and have a good relaxing time before finals,” Wheeler said.
