As an avid reader of many books, ranging from To Kill a Mockingbird to the Harry Potter series, I would be biased when it comes to books. This year’s Common Reader for the Frank Phillips campuses, titled This I Believe, is in my opinion an excellent piece of literary work. (Convocation, by the way, is Wednesday, Oct 7th at 11am in the BCAC)

This book is a collection of different essays from famous and non-famous people ranging from Ben Carson (if you have been keeping up with the political debates you would know him) to Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft. The stories are personal belief stories from every walk of life and teach a valuable lesson when it comes to our beliefs. Our beliefs are often shaped by different experiences and different family values and things that we all experience and take hold of, but what happens when you come across someone else’s beliefs? In our current culture, we find that sometimes people who differ from each other in beliefs can get along, while others can become quite hostile. This literary work does the opposite, however. It is an assembly of different beliefs put together in one book so that you can get a taste of other philosophies and other values in a more peaceful setting.

I really enjoyed this book. It is not very often that I can say this because as a mother of a toddler I do not get a bunch of time to look at books much less read them, but this book took my attention. I have seen other peoples’ hearts and other peoples’ beliefs and I feel I am all the better for it. I now understand why some people are the way they are and this book has been very humbling and enlightening at the same time. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did!
